A Swiss/Kirghiz couple with experience in entrepreneurship also in Kyrgyzstan decided to invest in the production of shyrdaks, handcrafted traditional felt carpets.
The concept is to modernize some of the typical shyrdak patterns and make those felt carpets attractive for the high end western market. The handcraft itself is kept in the traditional way and women in rural areas are engaged and contracted to sew the felt pieces by hand creating the shyrdaks. Swiss Shyrdak AG produces small quantities of customized high quality carpets on a fair trade basis supporting traditional handcraft and generating income for local families.
The loan from the SECO Start-up Fund is used as working capital and to purchase equipment and raw materials.
